Most of us are fascinated with the martial arts. From Karate to Mixed Martial Arts to Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, we love to watch people performing martial arts. There’s a flow — an artistry — to the fluidity of the movements and the effects of the punches and kicks for self-defense.

Martial arts are beautiful to watch, and you want to be able to perform this martial arts dance yourself. So where do you begin? With so many martial arts to choose from, which form of martial arts is for you?

Empire Self-Defense & Fitness located in the Albany, NY, area offers Krav Maga, Muay Thai kickboxing, Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, and mixed martial arts. Today we’ll explore the martial artistry form of Muay Thai.

As you might have guessed, with “Thai” in the name, this martial art type originated in Thailand in Southeast Asia. It is a combat sport, which uses stand-up striking and clinching techniques (grappling or utilizing clinch holds). This discipline is known as the “Art of Eight Limbs” since it uses fists, elbows, knees, and shins, of which you have two each.

Muay Thai began with one fighter, Nai Khanomtom. In the middle of the eighteenth century, Thailand (then known as Siam) was in a war with its neighbor, Burma. Khanomtom was captured in battle in 1767. He was offered the opportunity to fight for his freedom, and in doing so, impressed the Burmese so much with his hand-to-hand fighting style and his defeat of opponents that he was freed and allowed to return home.

The style spread and eventually grew into a sport, which gradually evolved into what we see today. As globalization took over the world, the spread and popularity of Muay Thai grew to what it is today. Empire Martial Arts specializes in helping the beginner in Muay Thai feel comfortable with the moves in a gradual learning progression. Visit us today to learn more!
